Because "conduct of divine service“, other than that prescribed by the Anglican Prayer Book, was forbidden above the high water mark by a clause in a property holding agreement, early non-conformists worshipped God on the beach!
In 1869, the clause was removed, and permission granted to erect a chapel. Singing was usually accompanied by a harmonium, for it wasn’t until 1900 that an organ was donated to the chapel.

After many additions and alterations the Church stands today on a firm foundation. Art Nouveau style stained glass windows depict the Tree of Life.
